The sacred precinct of Artemis

In May and June, the Austrian excavation team carried out geophysical surveys to the north of the Temple of Artemis within the sacred precinct. These surveys have revealed previously hidden structures beneath the ground. They demonstrate that the sacred precinct was also a space of economic, social and everyday life.

The research focuses on the question of what activities took place beyond the monumental temple within the area protected by the goddess, and who worked and lived there.

Project leader Lilli Zabrana from the Austrian Archaeological Institute of the Austrian Academy of Sciences expects further answers from an excavation in August. Things remain exciting!
